APEXIFICATION
WHAT IS AN APEXIFICATION?
An apexification is performed when the root of the tooth is not completely formed. This procedure may take several visits to complete.
The initial visit includes opening the tooth, pulpectomy, preparation of canal spaces, first placement of medication and necessary radiographs. This procedure includes the first phase of complete root canal therapy.
Interim visits may be required until the apex is closed or a calcific bridge has formed. At these visits, the intra-canal medication is replaced with new medication and radiographs may be taken. There may be several of these visits.
The final visit of an apexification includes removal of intra-canal medication and procedures necessary to place final root canal filling material including necessary radiographs. This procedure includes last phase of complete root canal therapy.
